Empowerment on the Mat: Exploring Trauma-Informed Yoga
Have you heard about trauma-informed yoga before?🧘♀️
Trauma-informed yoga is a therapeutic approach to yoga practice that emphasizes safety, choice, and empowerment. This approach makes practicing yoga safe and healing for everyone, regardless of their past experiences.
And trauma-informed yoga is POWERFUL! We know from research that this practice can reduce anxiety and PTSD symptoms, improve emotional regulation, enhance body awareness, and foster a sense of empowerment.
I first came across this approach about 6 years ago. At the time, I was a psychology student in New York with a passion for yoga and well-being science. And I was thrilled to learn about trauma-informed yoga!
This modality felt like the perfect combination of my passions and interests. So I soon enrolled in a trauma-informed yoga teacher training with the amazing NGO Exhale to inhale.
I incorporate elements from my trauma-informed training into every yoga session I teach!
This includes:
💫 Using invitational language rather than direct instructions
💫 Providing options and modifications to allow my students to explore and then choose what’s most supportive for them
💫 Always asking for consent before providing hands-on adjustments and my “signature” shavasana forhead & scalp massage
… And more!
My intention is to create a supportive and nurturing environment for all my yogis.
I invite you to join me on the mat and experience the transformative power of trauma-informed yoga!
I also offer private 1:1 trauma-informed yoga and mindfulness sessions for people who would benefit from a more individualized approach. Click here to learn more about 1:1 trauma-informed yoga.
