The Transformative Power of Embracing Stillness in Shavasana

Resting in shavasana after moving my body is one of my absolute favorite ways to relax my body and mind ✨

The first time I tried yoga was back in high school. A local gym offered yoga classes, and I was curious to try it out! Among all the poses, shavasana stood out. Lying there in complete stillness, I felt a sense of calm I hadn’t known before.

Shavasana derives from the Sanskrit words "shava" (corpse) and "asana" (pose), is a yoga practice where you lie on your back with arms and legs relaxed, eyes closed, and breathing deeply. The intention behind Shavasana is to achieve complete relaxation. In shavasana, we’re allowing the body to rest and integrate the benefits of the preceding yoga asana practice. This final relaxation pose is powerful for reducing stress and promoting overall well-being.

That moment of rest, after all the effort, was transformative. As a beginner, moving through a yoga flow practice was very challenging! And I remember thinking that shavasana made it all worth it.

So, I kept returning to yoga. And as a college student, I got really into my yoga practice. I noticed how helpful my practice was for my own health and well-being. And this inspired me to pursue yoga teacher trainings so I could share these practices with other people. I earned teacher certifications in vinyasa, yin yoga, restorative yoga, and trauma-informed yoga.

Now, I’ve practiced yoga for over 12 years, and I’ve taught yoga for over 6 years. And shavasana is still one of my favorite postures. It’s like a reminder that sometimes, doing nothing is the most powerful thing we can do.

Yet, shavasana can also be challenging for many people, because it requires letting go completely and finding stillness. In our fast-paced world, we are so used to do things all the time. Allowing ourselves a break from all the doing, and to simply let ourselves be, is incredibly powerful. And finding this stillness is an on-going practice.

Throughout my journey, I've seen many yoga students transform their lives through their practice. Watching them experience that same calm stillness in shavasana is very rewarding. It's a gentle reminder that we all deserve moments of complete relaxation and peace.

Whether you're an experienced yogi or a curious beginner, embracing shavasana can enhance your practice and your life. It's a simple yet profound way to reconnect with yourself, offering a space to breathe, reflect, and rejuvenate! 💛
