Let Your Yoga Practice be Guided by Intentions
Before every group yoga class I teach, I invite my yogis to take a moment and check in with themselves. How are they feeling today? What do they need?
Rather than rushing into a practice, we begin by asking simple but powerful questions: What do I want from this time on the mat? What would feel nourishing for me today?
I invite my yogis to set an intention for their practice. This is not about setting a goal to achieve by the end of class but more like finding a compass. Something to guide the practice in a way that feels supportive.
Setting an intention is a way to anchor ourselves, to remember why we’re here, especially when distractions or challenges arise. This intention can be anything - a feeling, a focus, or simply a word. Or maybe a short statement that describe how you want to feel. We come back to it throughout the practice, letting it lead us, not push us.
Here are some examples of intentions that I’ve used in my personal practice:
✨ Softness - “I will let my practice be gentle and soft today”
✨ Strength & Openness - “Strong core, open heart”
✨ Breath - “Today, the most important thing for me is to just breathe deeply”
✨ Release - “I’m letting go of tension and stress”
✨ Gratitude – “I’m grateful for this community, my body, and the practice itself”
Please keep in mind that these are just examples. There are no rights or wrongs when it comes to intentions. It’s really all about listening to your unique needs. Because yoga isn’t about chasing a perfect pose or challenging the ego. It’s about meeting ourselves where we are and doing what feels good for our body and mind in that moment.
Some days, this might mean a slow, gentle, and restorative practice. Other days, we might need to build heat, move energy, or strengthen the body. But it’s always about tuning into ourselves and making intentional choices that feel aligned with what we need, not what we think we “should” be doing.
So, next time you roll out your mat, I invite you to ask yourself: What do I need today? How can this practice support me? I invite you to use these questions as a gentle guide to practice yoga in a way that’s good for you❤️
