The Power of Deep Breathing: Your Nervous System’s Love Language
“Deep breathing is your nervous system’s love language.” I don’t know the origin of this quote, but I think it nicely captures the essence of why deep breathing is such a powerful resource.
Deep, intentional breaths can help us feel more at ease and calm in our body and mind. This happens because deep breathing activates our parasympathetic nervous system; the part of our nervous system that promotes rest and relaxation. This is the counterbalance to our ‘fight or flight’ response, which is triggered by stress and perceived danger.
Every time we breathe deeply, we activate this restful part of our nervous system. It’s like sending an invitation to our mind and body saying, “It’s okay, you’re safe, you can relax now.” This activation helps to slow down our heart rate, lower blood pressure, and bring a sense of calmness. It’s a simple, yet powerful tool we all have within us, wherever we go.
I’m not saying that deep breathing will solve all our problems. But I am saying that deep breathing is an accessible resource that’s always with you, ready to help you find balance in the daily stressors or challenging situation you navigate. So next time you feel overwhelmed or would like to find a bit more ease, I invite you to take a moment for yourself to practice deep breathing.
Let’s do it together:
I invite you to lengthen your spine…
Relax your shoulders…
Soften your jaw…
You can place your hands on your body if you want to…
And feel the breath in your body…
I invite you to inhale & exhale through your nose…
Take nice, deep inhales…
And slow, long exhales…
Repeat for 10 times or more, and notice how you feel ✨
