Unlocking your Brain’s Potential: The Power of Neuroplasticity & Change
TLDR: Your brain is malleable & change is possible!
Recently, I flipped through my grad school notes from my masters in Applied Positive Psychology at University of Pennsylvania. I came across notes about the science of change and neuroplasticity. I think this is such an important & useful concept, and therefore I wanted to share a little bit about it!
Neuroplasticity is the brain’s ability to change and adapt throughout our lives. Our brain is not hard-wired or set, rather our brain can reorganize its structure, connections, and functions in response to new experiences and learning.
This means that change is possible. While we might not be able to change our past, we have the power to shape our present and future through intentional action and experience.
Similarly to how a muscle gets stronger through exercise, engaging in new activities, learning new skills, and practices like yoga, mindfulness, and positive psychology interventions, can stimulate the growth of neural connections and pathways in the brain. So by actively engaging with our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, we can effectively rewire our brains to cultivate desired qualities such as optimism, compassion, resilience, and inner peace.
My invitation to you is that you embrace a “growth mindset” by recognizing that change is always possible and well-being is accessible. And reflect on which ways do you wish to “train” your brain!
